The Trifles

I’m in a pub with friends. One specific friend, who’s birthday it happens to be today, is talking. She is one of a very small group of people I would happily jump off a bridge for, if given a good enough reason. (There’s an even smaller group for whom I’d jump unquestioningly, but that’s neither here nor there.) Anyway, the point is, her earrings look like the Triforce, and I try to tell her so.

“Your earrings look like the Triforce.”

This stops the conversation, which was about James Macavoy. The friend to my left- between myself and my friend with the earrings- attempts to relay the information as best she can.

“She says your earrings look like trifles.”

“No, no, no, no. The Triforce.”

My friend with the earrings looks increasingly confused. “Specific trifles?”

And then I have to get out my notebook and draw the Triforce, and explain its significance, and my friend to my left understands because her twelve-year-old son has just finished playing Ocarina of Time, and for some reason this doesn’t make me feel any better about the situation.

I survive, however, and the conversation eventually turns to crazy drinking stories. I feel a bit out of my league. My ex-RAF friend once threw up on the Ministry of Defence. My friend with the earrings woke up in a bush once with a stranger’s shoes on.

I panic in the face of all this superior badassery and relate the tale of the night I drank three-quarters of a bottle of JD without noticing because I was too busy playing Left for Dead with my friends.

Cleft for Deaf?” says someone at the far end of the table, peering at me in bewilderment.

I give up.

“Anyone want another drink?”
